TREVOR LAWRENCE
Trevor Lawrence is an American saxophonist, record producer, composer, arranger and songwriter whose career spans more than six decades of recorded music, live performance, film, television and music production. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Lawrence emerged from the New York recording scene and went on to work with artists including the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Stevie Wnder, Marvin Gaye, The Rolling Stones, The Isley Brothers, Ringo Starr, Van Dyke Parks, Melissa Manchester, Leo Sayer, B.B. King, Joe Farrell and The Pointer Sisters.
His career encompasses performing at the 1969 Woodstock Festival; touring and recording with The Rolling Stones during their 1973 European Tour; saxophone and arranging work with Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder; and an extensive body of work as a producer, arranger, composer and songwriter. Lawrence co-wrote, arranged and co-produced “I’m So Excited,” recorded by The Pointer Sisters, and later expanded his work into film, television and independent media production.
Today, Lawrence continues to record, perform, compose, arrange and produce. He serves as co-leader, saxophonist, producer and co-composer with Masumi Yamamoto and TLQ plus.
Selected Career Narrative
Brooklyn and the New York Recording Scene
Lawrence began playing saxophone in Brooklyn, New York. By age thirteen, his musical development was being shaped by his neighbor Sol Moore, an accomplished baritone saxophonist who had performed with the Les Hite Orchestra. Lawrence later studied multiple woodwinds, composition and arranging, and by his early twenties had become a versatile presence in the competitive New York recording-session scene, doubling on tenor and baritone saxophones, flute, oboe and English horn.
The Isley Brothers, Woodstock, and Stevie Wonder
In 1969, Lawrence performed at the Woodstock Festival as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band horn section. That year he also played on recording sessions for The Isley Brothers, including “It’s Your Thing.” In the early 1970s, he became a member of Stevie Wonder’s original Wonder Love ensemble and recorded the driving tenor saxophone figure heard on “Superstition.” He later performed in the horn section on “Sir Duke” on the Songs In The Key Of Life album.
Los Angeles, Marvin Gaye and The Rolling Stones
After relocating to Los Angeles in 1972 Lawrence continued developing his work as a saxophonist and arranger, including contributions to Marvin Gaye’s Trouble Man Album. He toured with Stevie Wonder and The Rolling Stones across America in 1972. In 1973, he joined The Rolling Stones’ European Tour. After Bobby Keys left the tour, Lawrence anchored the horn section and performed the extended saxophone solo on “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” heard on The Brussels Affair—a performance that was historically miscredited to Keys.
Producing, Arranging and Songwriting
Across the 1970s and 1980s, Lawrence established an extensive career as a producer and arranger. His work included recordings by The Pointer Sisters, Melissa Manchester, Leo Sayer, Harry Nilsson Van Dyke Parks, Country Joe McDonald, Joe Farrell, B.B. King and The McCrarys. At Planet Records, he became part of the creative team behind major pop and soul recordings. He co-wrote, arranged and co-produced “I’m So Excited” and served as associate producer and arranger on The Pointer Sisters’ Break Out album.
Film, Television and Independent Media
Lawrence composed, arranged and produced “ I Just Want to Be Your Friend,” performed by Jeffrey Osborne for The Richard Pryor film "The Toy" and served as composer and music supervisor for "To Sir, with Love II", directed by Peter Bogdanovich and starring Sidney Poitier. His arranging work was also heard in the film "Thelma & Louise" through Martha Reeves’ recording of “Wild Night.” He later developed and produced independent television and media projects, including “Live From The Club” for BET Jazz and “B in Tune TV” for Viacom.
